Maybe one day Afghanistan will become a peaceful and prosperous country and its system of education will serve as an example to be followed. One day a new educational system may be adopted, the population will be able to boast of total literacy and thousands of well-educated specialists will participate in turning their native land into a rich country. However, nowadays the situation with schools is far from being good and optimistic.

There is no single car in front of the school. The kids and their teachers use bicycles.
According to law, any Afghan person has a right to education irrespective of gender, ethnic group or material welfare. Education both secondary and higher provided by the state is free. Besides, schoolchildren are provided by notebooks, pens and other necessary utilities at the expense of the state. Girls can be educated alongside with boys which was not allowed at the time of Taliban.
This is a headmaster. In reality schools lack furniture and rooms that can be used as classes. Only 20-30% of them are equipped with the essentials.
A school course lasts 12 years. It means that children from 6 to 18 years old study here. All of them come to the same class at different time. Small kids come before the lunch, elder ones – after it.
700 girls and 2000 boys of all ages attend this very school.
The school program is rich enough. In average, they have 4 classes per day and study 11-18 subjects including 4 languages such as Dari, Pashtu, English and Arabian.
Study of Koran makes the school program different from the one used in other countries.
Many children dream of entering a University after they complete the school. It is believed that state universities can provide them with better education though it’s not that simple to enter there.
Out of 120000 children willing to take entrance exams only 40000 have a right to get free education. All the rest will pass their exams next year or enter a private university.
Different useful specialties like a carpet weaver or assembler can be got at vocational school as well.
Unfortunately, even higher education obtained in a prestige state university doesn’t guarantee good carrier or income. Only specialists hired by foreign companies earn enough.
Thus, studying medicine for 8 years can be useful only because one can get good knowledge of a foreign language there.
A doctor’s salary doesn’t exceed that of a teacher who gets 100-200 dollars a month.
Only some people who obtained medical education work as doctors. The majority of them earn their living being interpreters or assistants to foreign journalists.
There are no marks at local schools. The level of knowledge is checked every half a year when pupils have to pass exams. According to the results, they make a decision on whether the children can be moved up or not. In case a kid fails to get 40 points out of 100 he will be asked to repeat the course.
Meet a monitor.
A monitor is someone who uses such sticks to punish children.
A teacher won’t punish anyone. In case of bad behavior he calls a monitor who enters a classroom and beats those who disobeyed.
If there was no monitor, no one would enter the classroom after the break.
There are neither lamps nor sockets in the class. The school lacks electricity and water supply.
Only walls are here.
Not enough desks are available, that’s why the guys have to share the tables.
Some kids study in the corridors as the classes are overcrowded.
